Walking Rugby & Football

The Six Nations is in full flow, the Rugby World Cup is around the corner, and there hasn’t been a better time to pick up the oval ball. Café 50 & Pontyclun Community Council, with support from the Cwm Taf Health Board & the HAPI project, have set up over-50s walking rugby & walking football sessions. After all, age and experience beats youth and talent; and here’s an opportunity to share that experience.

Walking rugby is a low impact, non-contact version of the game we all know and love. The sessions are delivered by the friendly experts at PlaySports and are open to men and women of all experience. Whether you’re a former hard-nosed semi professional or have never laced up a pair of boots in your life, these sessions are tailored to suit everyone and although targeted at over 50’s, are open to all ages.

The first session was held on Wednesday 6th February and was an instant success.

David Quinn from HAPI said:

  1. “We had an excellent response. Around twenty people turned up to take part in the first session. The coaching was brilliant, and everyone had a great time. I couldn’t resist taking part myself before the end!.”

Sessions are held every Wednesday from 10am in Pontyclun Park. Sessions are held on tarmacked playing areas, so a suitable pair of trainers and a drink is recommended to participate.

If rugby isn’t your cup of tea, a walking football session is offered immediately after the rugby. Participants may, of course, take part in both sessions.
